Repaying Student Loans
When considering your financial future, we encourage all students to understand the federal student loan and repayment process. Unlike grants, student loans must be repaid with interest, just like any personal loan.
The U.S. Department of Education uses several loan servicers for the Direct Loan Program. You will be notified by the assigned servicer with their contact information on where and when to send payments for your account. To access your Federal Loan Records from any previous loans used, current loans or to contact your loan servicer, please access the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) at www.nslds.ed.gov. If you cannot find your loan servicer information, you may contact the U.S. Department of Education at 1-800-433-3243.
No matter how difficult your financial situation becomes, all student loans must be repaid. There are several repayment plans to choose from that are designed to meet individual needs. The amount required to be paid, and the length of time to pay off the loan, will vary per plan assigned. Detailed information should be requested from your assigned loan servicer that manages your account. For a complete list of repayment plans, please visit StudentAid.gov/repay-loans/understand/plans or contact your federal loan servicer.
