Course Description

This continuing education course is designed for individuals who have prior healthcare training and/or are licensed/certified in a healthcare field and/or are currently working in the healthcare industry. The course provides individuals with an understanding of the responsibilities of a Clinical Medical Assistant. The course also provides an overview of how to accurately perform the following skills: triage, measure and record vital signs, prepare exam rooms, clean and sterilize medical equipment, administer injections, as well as topical and oral medications, and perform venipuncture and point-of-care testing. In addition, the course promotes communication skills, legal and ethical considerations, safety measures, and emergency response. Upon successful completion of this course, a Certificate of Completion will be issued.

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course, individuals will have the opportunity to apply for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) exam to become a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. The application and testing fee must be submitted by the individual to NHA prior to receiving a test date. For more information, please visit www.nhanow.com.

Testing Site

Taylor College is a testing site for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Students who submit their application(s) and testing fee(s) to NHA can take the certification exams at the College.

Hands-on Skills Practice

Clinical skills will be practiced in the classroom lab setting. Upon successful completion of this course Individuals will have the opportunity to participate in a clinical experience* to practice hands-on skills in a professional clinical environment.

*Please note that the clinical site assignment is assigned for one of the weeks following the actual course and is at least 1-week in duration, on weekdays and on day shift. If appropriate, an individual may have the option to complete this portion at their current place of employment.

Clinical Facility & Experience

The Medical Assistant clinical experience will be completed in a professional setting. Individuals participating in the clinical portion of the course, at a facility assigned to you by Taylor College, are required to successfully pass a Level ll Background Check. The Medical Assistant clinical experience is not required for certification but is designed to give individuals hands-on experience observing and training with a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting. An individual must have an ID badge to perform the externship in a clinical setting. Badges can be obtained from the school's reception area.

Listed below are requirements for those individuals participating in the Medical Assistant clinical experience:

  • The course instructor will provide individuals with the location and time of clinicals.
  • While performing at the facility, individuals must wear scrubs or follow the facility's dress code.
  • While at the facility individuals must adhere to all HIPAA privacy policies.
  • Individuals are responsible for any actions while in attendance at the facility.

Non-Credit Courses

Taylor College's continuing education courses are designed to prepare individuals for professional opportunities and advancement in their current field of study or area of employment. Individuals will receive hands-on education through the guidance of qualified faculty in both practice and theory, all reinforced with interaction with professionals in specialized industries.

Continuing Education courses are excluded from accreditation with the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), and licensing from the Commission for Independent Education, CIE.
