Phlebotomy Test Prep Course

Course Description

This non-accredited course is designed to prepare students for the Phlebotomy Competency Exam. It is designed to be delivered in an online and lab setting, and focus on instruction of theory and skills practice. The student will:

  • Review theory and clinical procedures necessary to succeed as a phlebotomist.
  • Complete written examinations based on content learned in class.
  • Develop skills to draw blood for various blood tests for entry-level positions in hospitals, doctor’s office and laboratories.
  • Perform 1 – 2 hours of study each day to prepare for lectures and examinations.

Entrance Requirements

  • Copy of Social Security Card
  • Copy of High School Diploma, GED Certificate, Official High School Transcripts and/or Official GED Transcripts
  • Completed Enrollment Application (provided at appointment)
  • Completed Program Policies (provided at appointment)
  • Level II Background Check (Must be completed and submitted to Taylor College prior to beginning class the first day.)

Certification

Once a student has completed the course, they will have the option to apply for the Phlebotomy Competency Exam to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. Prior to applying for the exam, students must complete 30 venipuncture and 10 capillary live sticks and supply documentation to the College. Testing to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician is conducted by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). An application and testing fee must be submitted by the student to NHA prior to receiving a testing date. For more information please visit www.nhanow.com.

Testing Site

Taylor College is a testing site for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Students who submit their application and testing fee to NHA can take the Phlebotomy Competency Exam at the college.

Clinicals

To be eligible for the Phlebotomy Competency Exam, students must complete a total of 40 live sticks (30 venipuncture and 10 capillary) at a facility that has authorized you to conduct this procedure. Clinical options will be provided to qualifying students during their course attendance. Students must register to attend clinicals when the opportunity is provided to them during their course attendance. Note: Clinical setups will not be provided after course completion. Students who wish to attend a clinical site set up by Taylor College must have their Level II Background Check completed and submitted to Taylor College prior to beginning class the first day.

Listed below are requirements of the student performing their Phlebotomy externship:

  • While performing at the facility, the student must wear scrubs or follow the facility’s dress code.
  • While you are at the facility you must adhere to the HIPAA privacy policies.
  • The student is responsible for any actions while in attendance at the facility.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to get documentation from a facility showing that you have completed the required number of live sticks. This documentation must be submitted to the College.

Non-Credit Courses

Students will receive hands-on education through the guidance of qualified faculty, practice, and theory; all reinforced with interaction with professionals in specialized industries.

*All Test Prep and Continuing Education courses are excluded from Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
